The FR5 is a sensible model to investigate when your shortlist includes a compact collaborative robot. A useful evaluation starts with your part, tooling, cycle, and support requirements. A robot that looks right on paper still needs to prove the complete task.
The published starting point
Fairino lists a nominal payload of 5 kg, a reach of 922 mm, six rotating joints, and pose repeatability of ±0.02 mm. The manufacturer also lists a maximum payload of 7 kg. Bring your part to the demonstration
Write down the exact job before the demo. Include your heaviest part, the gripper and adapter, the most awkward approach, and the required finish or placement. Ask to see the full sequence, including loading, part detection, recovery from a missed pick, and a restart after interruption.
A short repeatable test is more useful than a polished sample program. Record the software version, cycle time, conditions, and what the supplier changed to achieve the result.
Ask about the whole installation
- Which controller, cables, pendant, software, and communication options are included?
- Who owns the integration, commissioning, and acceptance work?
- Can your team maintain the program and recover from common faults?
- Who answers support requests in your time zone, and which spare parts are held locally?
Compare like for like
Put the same written application in front of each supplier. A bare arm quotation and an installed cell are different scopes. Ask for separate prices and lead times for the arm, tooling, fixtures, integration, training, and support. Record exclusions alongside the total.
