faceplate reference with somebody's thumbprint across it

I can trace our FR5 faceplate images to the physical samples, but one supposed scratch runs through a handling mark and changes dramatically with presentation. Quality has not judged that mark separately. Should we repeat the comparison after the agreed production preparation before treating this image as a defect reference? I do not want to clean away a real production problem just to improve the pictures.
