Why does our FR5 layer need cartons receiving may stop buying?

The proposed alternating FR5 layer relies on the reinforced ends of one packed carton version. Purchasing is considering another version with the same outside size. I asked for its support detail before the layer was approved and got told we could just keep buying the old one. That's a supply decision, surely, not a note to hide on a drawing?

Has purchasing agreed to retain the old packed construction, or is that only the layout designer's suggestion?

Only the suggestion. Purchasing says the alternative supplier was being considered because the old construction has become awkward to source, not because anyone fancied a different box colour.

Then compare both actual packed constructions, because restricting supply to save this pattern might cost more than changing the pattern.

And receiving needs a way to distinguish them if both arrive during a changeover; same outside dimensions will not tell the operator which layer instruction applies.

Could the current stock be handled under the existing packing route while a pattern for the new construction is reviewed, rather than forcing one proposed cell to accommodate an undefined transition?

Amara, that sounds worth pricing, but who has confirmed the new construction is becoming the standard rather than remaining a second source?

Neither decision made yet, Mina. Purchasing now has three explicit options: retain the old pack, approve the new one as another source, or change over fully. We've stopped describing that as a tooling detail.

Show the different support arrangements beside those choices, not only the purchasing prices; nobody should choose a cheap box and accidentally commit to an expensive cell revision.

Amara's transition option also needs somewhere for old stock to go, even if it stays manual; returning half-used supplies can make a tidy cutoff surprisingly untidy.

We've counted the old packed stock and part-used supplies. Existing packing can use them without changing its route. That gives us a real transition option, rather than assuming the cupboard empties itself.

Thanks for checking the part-used supplies as well; they are usually the last bits to announce that the changeover was not quite finished.

Have packaging and tooling actually assessed a layer for the new construction now?

They've assessed a non-alternating candidate for the new packed construction together, including the finger exit and our partial orders. It uses fewer cartons per layer. Dispatch has priced the extra movements; purchasing has the full comparison.

Then the layer count can finally be one cost among the others, instead of the rule that decides which cartons everyone is allowed to buy.

Decision made: use up old stock on the existing route and proceed with the reviewed lower-count candidate for the new construction. We aren't ordering old cartons just to preserve the alternating sketch. Receiving has the two identities and the transition instruction.

That answers the supply question too. Keep the construction identity on the purchase line, so the next same-size substitute doesn't restart this argument.
