Can't teach loading while each bracket finds a different seat

I'm supposed to help write the changeover sheet for an FR10 inspection nest, but three accepted brackets settle against different contacts when we try them on the bench. The designer wants a bigger clamp. I do not know enough fixture design to name the fault. I do know I cannot write push it down harder as the loading instruction. What should I ask the designer to show us?

Ask them to mark the intended locating contacts against the bracket datums, then demonstrate the seat on your identified samples. A drawing of every surface touching isn't an explanation of which surfaces should decide position.

They marked three bottom supports, two side contacts and an end stop. The troublesome sample lifts off one bottom support when it reaches the side contacts.

Have they checked that sample's actual surfaces and dimensions against the drawing? It can be an accepted part and still expose a tolerance combination the nest designer overlooked.

I would also ask whether any removable support has been fitted differently from the model, because you could spend a lot of time explaining the design while the bench tool is assembled another way.

Fair point. Nadia, can someone compare the built nest with the current assembly drawing?

Toolroom checked it. One side contact has a shim not shown on the current drawing. Nobody has identified why it was added yet. The samples are with inspection for a closer dimensional check.

Look at the issue record for that contact if stores has one, because a replacement might explain when the shim appeared, though I would not treat the issue date as proof of what was fitted.

That is worth following, but I would still want the designer's tolerance check even if the shim comes out; the original contact scheme has not been explained yet.

Does the same sample sit differently if you offer it to the nest again, Nadia, or does each bracket consistently prefer its own contacts?

Each bracket is consistent across our bench checks. Inspection found different side-face positions within tolerance. Designer is comparing those with the locating scheme and the undocumented shim.

Thanks, that was what I wanted to distinguish before calling it random seating.

The bigger clamp proposal is withdrawn while they revise the contact arrangement. We haven't tested a replacement design. Training sheet stays unfinished for now; at least the missing answer belongs with the designer, not the operators.

Please keep those three samples for the revised-nest check. They have already earned their place in the trial set.
