A refurbished Universal Robots UR5e looks tempting for our parts tray unloading setup with a small aluminum block in a supervised handling workshop. The price is attractive and the listing says 'inspected', but i haven't seen the inspection scope. What should i ask for before paying to collect it?

It would help to know whether you've a condition assessment or only a list of replaced items. What documentation has the seller supplied beyond the listing?

@GabrielBrown0888 A replacement list. Nothing about the assemblies they left alone. Better than nothing, but 'inspected' is doing a lot of work here.

Request the unit-specific inspection scope and a complete inventory of what's included. You can then make a qualified condition assessment and a demonstration relevant to your application conditions of purchase.

@GabrielBrown0888 Sorry, basic question: doesn't refurbished mean they checked the whole thing? I'm not sure what the label promises.

@LinBell0618 You need the underlying scope to know what the description means here. Request the checks performed, their results and anything excluded for this particular unit.

@GabrielBrown0888 When I bought a used arm for my setup, an itemised inventory revealed that a cable we needed wasn't included. Identifying it made the extra cost straightforward to establish

Did you ask for photos of every item? Their bundle description is mostly 'complete system', which isn't helping me much.

Photos helped with mine, alongside an itemised list. Have them identify the controller, pendant, cables and included software access rather than relying on the group photo

A successful demonstration of your handling task should address the main condition uncertainty left after the paperwork review.

A demonstration doesn't settle the gap in the replacement list. Successfully handling something isn't a condition assessment of the assemblies that weren't replaced

You're right to challenge that. I should have described the demonstration as evidence about the application, with the independent condition questions still requiring qualified assessment.

@GabrielBrown0888 i visited and saw normal movement and a successful transfer. We didn't see a backup restored, though. i'm keeping that blank on my checklist.

@JonasAli0198 What distinguishes having a backup from demonstrating recovery? I'm wondering whether simply checking that the file opens is enough.

@LinBell0618 The useful question is whether the system can recover its required configuration through the appropriate procedure. Ask the seller and assessor to define a controlled demonstration and identify the access it requires.

For my setup, sorting access permissions was a separate handover item. A folder of files didn't explain who could actually use the recovery tools

Would you include support contact details in that handover? i don't want 'ask the previous owner' to be our maintenance plan.

Yes. Ask who supports this configuration, what access transfers, and what service documentation comes with it. Get the scope stated rather than assuming support follows the hardware.

And don't treat a list of replaced items as a list of every possible fault. It says what they changed, not what they ruled out
