I am reviewing a proposed machine-tending fixture and the notes include photographs marked 'before' and 'after'. Neither view shows a reference face or scale, so I cannot tell whether they document a change or merely two different camera positions. What is the smallest useful addition to a review like this before people start interpreting it as measurement evidence?

Put one known face or feature in both views and say what it is. A ruler stuck beside it can help, but only if it is in the same plane as the thing people are meant to judge. Otherwise it is just more kit in the photo.

What are they actually trying to prove with it? If it is just that the clamp touches a different face, a labelled view may be enough. If it is a movement claim, then they need a defined reference and a measurement method, not a better angle.

Yes, I was leaping from an ambiguous photo to an accuracy question. The immediate job is simpler: label the claimed feature and reference, then decide whether a measurement is needed. That is a much more honest review note.

Would you keep an overview next to the close-up? A labelled face is useful only if the next reader can find it on the fixture. I'd rather have two plainly related views than one very tidy crop that removes the surroundings.

Yes, for the requested new views. I would keep the existing pair alongside them as context, but not add labels that suggest we have recovered a reference the old photographs never showed. The old comparison remains limited.
