Can I retire this mysterious correction tab?

I'm redesigning a gusseted-bracket fixture for an FR10 proposal. The old jig has a tab labelled correction, but released parts failed height checks. I want to understand it before giving the mystery a fresh drawing number.

Find which measurement the tab was meant to correct, and whether that measurement was taken clamped or released. The word correction sounds reassuring, but it doesn't identify a target or establish that the change worked.

The surviving note says it brought the upright against a checking pin while clamped. No released result is attached. I had assumed the tab was tied to final height.

Then treat that final-height connection as unproven. Also check which part revision the pin arrangement belonged to. Old shop aids sometimes outlive the drawing they were designed around.

We inherited a similar jig with several handwritten edits. A simple revision timeline helped us separate observed changes from explanations people supplied later. Could you put the tab note alongside the drawing and inspection revisions before deciding what to retain?

Include who supplied each explanation. An operator's recollection can be valuable, but it should remain identifiable as recollection rather than silently becoming a measured result.

Timeline started. The tab note predates the current gusset revision. Our senior machinist remembers using it for fit-up, not inspecting finished height. I've written that as his recollection.

That makes copying it unchanged harder to justify. Have quality define final acceptance independently, then let the fixture review consider whether that old fit-up aid serves the new parts at all.

On a previous bracket review, aligning the fixture measurement to the drawing exposed a datum error; do not attribute the released height failures to welding distortion until the measurement conditions are established.

We found mixed revisions in retained samples. Are yours individually identified?

Those are useful checks before any physical change. You might have a process problem and a records problem together; the history described so far cannot separate them.

Only some samples are traceable, so quality is using those for the first review. The correction tab is excluded from the proposed design pending a defined purpose. Thanks, this has stopped me copying a label instead of a requirement.

Let us know what the traceable samples show under the agreed measurement setup. That's the result that can move the fixture discussion beyond the old note.
