Which bracket dimension was checked before the straightening note?

Found an old bracket sample tagged pass, then discovered it had been straightened before inspection. We're reviewing fixtures for an FR5 welding proposal. How do I find out what that jig actually achieved?

Look for an identified measurement after release but before straightening. The accepted sample can show the required final condition, but it cannot show the untreated result on its own.

There is an angle reading on the route card, but no indication whether the bracket was clamped. The sample tag only has the final inspection number.

Can inspection connect that route card to the tagged sample? I would establish that before trying to explain the angle reading.

I had a batch folder where the route card was for the first piece and the retained sample was from the end of the run. Both were valid records, just not a before-and-after pair. Ask whoever kept these how the sample was selected.

Inspection says the tag identifies the batch, not a particular bracket. So no, Aaron, we can't connect those two. Will, that's a useful warning about the retained sample.

Keep the distinction in your review. You can still use the sample to discuss the finish and final geometry without turning it into evidence of how much this jig distorted a bracket.

I've separated them. The fabrication lead is looking for the old setup instruction, particularly what press gusset down meant before clamping.

Ask how long that fit-up work took as well, because the new cell estimate can lose quite a lot between those three words.

Was the gusset the same revision as the proposed part?

That revision check matters for the fixture too. A locating face added for an earlier gusset may have a different purpose with the current component.

Old gusset is revision B; proposed assembly uses D. B had an extended lower edge that D removes. The fixture sketch in the folder still shows a contact beneath that old edge.

Give the designer both component drawings and that contact sketch. Let them establish the intended locators for D. Adding another clamp to an old picture could make an obsolete contact more effective at doing the wrong thing.

Sent both. They are reviewing the current contacts before quoting the fixture. We still haven't found a released reading from before straightening, so the old correction amount is unknown.

Will the new trial include fit-up and untouched released readings on the same identified pieces? That would answer more than another measurement of the retained sample.

Yes. Inspection and the welding specialist are planning those stages together. They also want to assess the incoming gussets rather than assume all the gap came from the fixture.

And keep correction labour in the estimate until that trial tells you whether it is still needed.

Did removing that old contact change the proposal much?

Oscar, it hasn't been removed yet. The designer is proposing a revised locating arrangement for D, but the review is unfinished. I don't have a cost comparison to share.

The revised fixture concept is back with a current-part sample plan. The old contact is omitted in the proposal, not altered on the existing jig. Thanks all; we now have a defined trial to price instead of copying the straightening note.

Please return with the released measurements when the trial happens. I would be interested whether the incoming fit-up check changes the explanation as well.
