Our weldment looks aligned until it comes out of the fixture

We're planning preparing robotic welding of gusseted brackets with Fairino FR10 on a gusseted steel support bracket weldment in a small steel assemblies factory. Our old inspection notes say it looks aligned while restrained, then falls outside the drawing requirement after release. I want to untangle fit-up, fixture location and final inspection before our new cell inherits an unexplained correction routine. This is a records review, not live welding adjustment.

Compare the specified inspection condition and reference supports with the historical sheets. Do individual measurements identify whether the assembly was restrained or released?

@SamBell0681 The sheets mix clamped checks and released measurements. Some don't say which. The drawing has the dimension, but our procedure leaves the support condition vague.

Ask quality and the design owner to establish the intended acceptance condition, then group historical results by their documented measurement state to support comparison.

@SamBell0681 Same restraint label still doesn't mean comparable. Unknown supports and mixed fixture or process revisions could remain inside those groups.

That's a fair correction. State grouping addresses only one source of difference; the review also needs support conditions and fixture and process references, with missing information explicitly identified.

@SamBell0681 Should a fixture revision remain unknown when a colleague remembers a likely version but no record confirms it? We're disagreeing about whether to fill those gaps.

Keep the revision unconfirmed in the data. A separate note can preserve the recollection as a lead without presenting it as an established fixture reference.

@SamBell0681 I had a separate bracket job where inferred fixture revisions created an apparent trend. Once the original sheets established the revisions, the trend no longer held.

If the fixture holds it straight, why isn't that already the result we want?

@PriyaAbbott0046 The acceptance requirement may apply to the released assembly. A dimension maintained by fixture restraint doesn't establish what that dimension will be once the restraint is removed.

I've had the drawing owner confirm the released inspection condition and its reference supports. Quality is adding those requirements to the sheet so the measurement state is explicit.

Useful clarification. It doesn't retroactively tell you how the unlabelled old measurements were taken, though.

@HenryBaker0438 I'll keep those old entries flagged. The new definition helps the review; it doesn't magically repair the old paperwork.

For the linked samples, add incoming fit-up observations beside released results. Your welding engineer can assess any association within the documented process conditions.

I've found varying incoming fit-up in the traceable records for assemblies that changed shape after release. The association is visible, although it doesn't establish causation.

Present that association with the limits of the available records. It can be worth the welding engineer's attention without being described as an established cause.

My review approach is settled: establish the acceptance condition and use measurements with identifiable conditions. I can take that forward while leaving fixture and process changes dependent on specialist assessment.

You've answered how to frame the records review, with any design or process change still dependent on what the specialists establish.
