How do I distinguish these FR5 inserts before buying readers?

Two aluminium-housing inserts fit the same base. Both also fit backwards. Our proposed changeover screen checks the selected recipe, which is optimistic when it has no idea what we've bolted down. I want to start with the inserts and a bench check. What should I ask the designer to prevent mechanically, and what still needs a separate identity and seating check?

Put both inserts beside their drawings. Mark the locating faces and orientation first. You need to see exactly what the common base allows.

Both seat fully in either direction. The housings don't sit properly in the reversed insert, but nothing stops someone fitting it that way. Same fixing pattern on both families.

We had two inspection nests that differed only at one small support. Someone painted one red and called the changeover solved. Cleaning took the paint off; the shape was still wrong but now it was wrong in the approved colour. I wouldn't reject a readable label, but put it where the operator can inspect it after installation, and get the designer to look at preventing the reversal. I don't know enough about your inspection to say how that feature should be made.

Try the proposed mechanical key in a cheap mock-up before anyone quotes readers. You might remove the backward fit and still have the wrong-family problem, which is worth knowing early.

FelixBrooks, yes to a visible label, but visible from where? A lovely number underneath the installed nest helps the person carrying it, then disappears for the person checking it

Give the installed view to the setter. They can tell you whether the reference is readable from their actual position.

The designer's mock-up prevents reversal. It doesn't distinguish families. Setter wants the family mark on the front, which remains visible with the housing loaded. We're keeping separate family identification in the proposal.

How will you check it's seated, Jordan?

And don't buy a family reader as the answer to FelixBrooks's question. It could read the right insert while it's sitting on debris.

I'd make removal and cleaning part of the setter review too, Jordan. If the key creates a pocket you can't see or clean easily, you may have swapped one nuisance for another

FelixBrooks, the designer is proposing a separate seated check. FelixAdams, the mock-up did trap debris behind the added feature. Setter spotted it during removal, so that shape is being changed.

Worth the mock-up, then.

Revised shape clears for cleaning. Our controls proposal now compares family identity with the recipe and requires the seated condition; missing or contradictory information holds the job. The designer and assessor still need to agree the implementation.

Include the right family lifted slightly from its seat in their review examples. That is the one people tend to wave through because the label looks correct.

One more for the setter, Jordan: can the front mark still be seen when the removable guard is in its normal place? You haven't mentioned that view

There isn't a guard in the bench mock-up. I'll have the integrator check the installed view before we fix the marking position. Thanks for catching the assumption.
