Carton supports versus the second layer

Our FR10 pallet plan looks lovely until I draw the loaded strips under the cartons, then half the rotated layer seems to bridge gaps; I don't know enough about packaging to sign that off, and the gripper supplier wants an approved pattern first.

Get packaging and the gripper supplier looking at it together, otherwise each is waiting for the other to approve the space they need.

Meeting booked. Bringing a packed carton instead of another empty rectangle.

Actual pallet too, or its measured board layout.

Does the carton drawing identify which strips carry the contents? A visible fold underneath may not be the support feature you think it is. Packaging should confirm that before the discussion gets too far.

Yes, packaging confirmed the two loaded strips from the insert section. That part isn't my guess, luckily.

Match that section to the current carton revision and contents. I have seen similar outside boxes carry the load differently after an insert change, so the physical sample and the drawing need to describe the same package.

Which carton revision is on your sample, Jo?

Revision D, same as the section from packaging. Supplier had modelled revision B, so that's now being corrected.

What changed between B and D? We had to check the packaging revision on our own layer review before the tool outline was useful.

Insert position. Outside box dimensions stayed the same. The supplier now has D and says one corner release is tight with the current fingers.

Do they have the surrounding placed cartons in that view?

And show the fingers withdrawing. The carton still being held above its spot is the easy picture.

They've added neighbours and withdrawal. Current pattern doesn't leave room. Packaging is considering a lower-count layer, toolmaker is considering shorter fingers. Neither option approved.

Can the shorter fingers still reach the required contact area on the carton? I would want that checked on the packed sample rather than inferred from the extra clearance.

Still being checked. No sample trial yet; the lower-count layer also needs packaging to look at the full stack.

Include whatever sheets and restraint the finished unit load requires in that stack review. Approving a layer in isolation could leave the dispatch arrangement incomplete.

Has planning priced the lower-count option? Might be cheaper than clever fingers.

They are comparing it now. I've held the tooling order until one whole arrangement survives packaging, handling and dispatch review. Bit less pretty than the first drawing, much more useful.
