I'm reviewing historical records for our planned defining dimensional control for bracket welding with Fairino FR10 and a gusseted steel support bracket weldment in a small steel assemblies factory. The notes describe alignment under restraint but dimensions outside the drawing requirement after release. I'd like to distinguish incoming fit-up, fixture location and final acceptance before carrying an unexplained correction routine into the new cell; no live welding adjustments are involved.
@CarlaAli0227 Does the inspection procedure define the released condition and reference supports? Check that alongside whether each old measurement says how the assembly was held.
@AaronBarnes0523 My sheets contain both restrained and released results, with some conditions unlabelled. Although the drawing specifies the dimension, the inspection procedure doesn't clearly define the supports.
Have quality and the drawing owner define the acceptance condition. Group the old results by known measurement state; that should make them comparable.
@IsabelAbbott0039 That's a fair correction. State grouping addresses only one source of difference; the review also needs support conditions and fixture and process references, with missing information explicitly identified.
Should a fixture revision remain unknown when a colleague remembers a likely version but no record confirms it? We're disagreeing about whether to fill those gaps.
@CarlaAli0227 Mark it unknown. You can note the recollection separately as something to investigate, but don't turn a probable revision into a recorded fact.
I had a separate bracket job where inferred fixture revisions created an apparent trend. Once the original sheets established the revisions, the trend no longer held.
Because the required inspection condition may be after release. Holding a shape under restraint doesn't establish the shape the assembly takes without that restraint.
@AaronBarnes0523 The drawing owner confirms released inspection on specified reference supports. Quality is putting that condition into the sheet. At least that part won't be guessed.
I'll preserve the uncertainty on those historical entries. Establishing the intended condition gives the review a basis without supplying missing facts about past measurements.
For the linked samples, add incoming fit-up observations beside released results. Your welding engineer can assess any association within the documented process conditions.
@AaronBarnes0523 I've found varying incoming fit-up in the traceable records for assemblies that changed shape after release. The association is visible, although it doesn't establish causation.
Present that association with the limits of the available records. It can be worth the welding engineer's attention without being described as an established cause.
@NoraChan1105 More restraint can change the behaviour, but doesn't guarantee the released dimensions. Have the fixture specialist and welding engineer assess restraint, thermal movement and release together.
@AaronBarnes0523 I'll leave the restraint change for the design review. Would proposed welding-sequence changes belong in the material sent to the welding engineer as well?
