Are we choosing pads before defining an acceptable mark?

I'm reviewing gripper samples for a UR5e placing finished collars in inspection trays, and our team cannot agree whether a faint ring on the visible surface is acceptable. The supplier proposes softer pads. I would rather establish the surface criterion and then test holding and clean release together, but I need something more concrete than five people tilting a collar under five lights.
