Refurbished FR5, inspection sheet has two ticks

I went to see a used lab centrifuge once and inspected meant someone had wiped it. Now I've got a tempting refurbished FR5 quote for unloading trays, with a sheet that says powers on and moves. Before I book collection, what would turn that into a worthwhile inspection?

Ask what refurbished involved. Cleaning, replacing a component and verifying an assembly are not interchangeable descriptions, however shiny the photograph.

Seller says a wrist cover was replaced and cables checked. No dates or part references on the sheet.

Why was the cover replaced? Cosmetic damage may be all it was, but I'd want the history before paying somebody to inspect around it.

A replaced cover doesn't prove a collision. Ask for the repair history without turning a missing explanation into a diagnosis.

Agreed. I'm asking because the answer sets the inspection scope, not because a new cover establishes damage underneath.

Who will support it when it reaches your workshop, and will they review the proposed package now? A low collection price gets less attractive if your first local call is someone explaining that the controller or software access is missing.

Our usual contractor will review it. Seller has now said the cover was cracked during storage, no repair report available. I've asked for the complete package list before paying for a visit.

That seems a reasonable next expense to postpone until the list arrives. Make sure the contractor knows your intended tray task as well; condition and suitability need separate answers.

Get permission for an independent inspection in writing before booking the inspector. A visit restricted to watching the seller's demo won't answer every condition question.

Have you seen the controller start from off, or only a running arm in a clip? What access did the seller demonstrate?

And ask which records the inspector can see. Missing history should stay visible in their report rather than quietly becoming no known faults.

Only a running clip, so far. Package list arrived without a pendant, despite one being in the pictures. That deserves an answer before we get into clever inspection details.

Definitely ask. Still could be a list error, but don't arrange collection on the strength of a photograph.

The quote needs to specify what you receive, including the means to configure and operate the supplied system. An inspector cannot make missing accessories materialise.

Did the contractor come back on support? You may need their answer before deciding whether a revised package price is still attractive.

They'll support an assessed complete package. Seller wants extra for the pendant and hasn't accepted an independent visit yet, so I've cancelled the provisional collection slot. Still willing to hear a proper offer, but not chasing it.

Reasonable place to stop spending money. You can compare it again if they supply a complete offer and agree the inspection.

Keep the revised package list with the quote. The picture will still show a pendant next time somebody forwards the link internally.
