Planning my tabletop arm project and trying not to make every small experiment depend on another print. I have access to a shared printer, not one of my own. Would you start with one simple finger shape and a fixed set of objects, or leave room in the budget for several versions? I like the design part, but I also want to spend some time learning the robot. A folder full of fingers isn't quite the project I had in mind.

I'd reserve some printing budget, but I wouldn't design the spare versions yet; pick the first object and write down what a different finger would need to improve, otherwise you'll spend the queue designing answers to problems you haven't got.

Fair point. I was treating several finger designs as more learning, but hadn't decided what I'd compare. One object first sounds manageable. Would changing its starting position be enough variety, or am I dodging the gripping part of the project?

That's a different question, not cheating. I'd separate 'can this finger hold the object' from 'can the setup find it in another position'. You can learn plenty from the first without making the second your weekend as well.
