Do we copy the shim stack into the new welding fixture?

I'm reviewing records for our FR10 bracket cell. Old fixture has loose shims. Nobody signed their purpose.

Where are the shims? Under a locator and under a worn clamp foot are rather different stories.

Under the rear locator block. Three pieces, different thicknesses. The drawing shows none.

Then establish what position that stack creates before copying it. It might be a deliberate correction, but it might also be somebody's repair to a damaged mounting face.

Do the sheets show parts measured after unclamping, or only while held?

And does the inspection datum match the fixture datum? Otherwise you can spend ages explaining a difference introduced by the measurement setup.

Inspection is on the bench. The sheet references the base face; fixture drawing references two holes.

Different datums can be legitimate. Have quality explain the relationship on one actual drawing before treating that as the fault.

Could you photograph the locator and stack beside the old drawing? It would give the original toolmaker something concrete to recognise without paying for a new fixture yet.

We inherited a shim that compensated for a repair. Has that mounting face ever been resurfaced?

That's plausible, but the stack itself won't tell us. Look for a maintenance entry tied to the fixture number.

Found a repair invoice mentioning the block mounting face. No amount removed, unfortunately.

Does the invoice identify this fixture, or a similar one in the same batch?

This fixture number, and the toolmaker recognised the repair from our photo.

Ask what finished locator position he restored. A new base may need no equivalent shim at all, provided it puts the locator in that verified position.

He has the inspection sketch. Stack restored the original height after the repair, not a weld allowance.

That photo earned its keep then. Are the released bracket measurements still outside tolerance with the restored height?

Some are. We can specify the locator now, but quality still needs to investigate the released shape.

Fair distinction. Keep the repair sketch with the new fixture specification so the loose shims don't become a mysterious welding requirement again.
