The old bracket check says fine, then says bend it

I'm sorting our bracket paperwork before the FR10 project review. First sheet says aligned in fixture. Next says outside tolerance after release, then correct. Who should explain what correct actually meant?

Start with the welding lead and whoever signed the final inspection. The word alone doesn't tell you what was done or how they judged it finished.

Final inspector is still here. The setter who did the correction has retired. Typical timing.

Does the inspector have the actual readings?

Also ask whether correction was routine or limited to particular batches; that changes how much hidden work your new production plan may be inheriting.

Useful distinction. A single rework case isn't the normal cycle.

Found it on several batches. Still can't tell whether every bracket needed it or somebody copied the note across the traveller.

Then leave that frequency unknown for now.

Do the sheets identify the bracket before and after correction? We had batch totals that couldn't tell us whether a recheck was the same piece.

Keep the pre-correction and final readings separate when transcribing them. The final accepted value is useful, but replacing the earlier value would erase the problem you are trying to understand.

Yes, don't tidy the awkward bit out of the data.

Inspector has a notebook with individual IDs and final readings. No matching measurements before correction. I've asked him about the gap, not filled it in from the batch sheet.

That's useful final evidence, although it won't tell you how much correction each bracket needed. Has the welding lead found a written method?

Not yet. He remembers the setter using a separate bench fixture, which isn't on our equipment list.

Find that fixture before budgeting away the setter's job.

Stores thinks it may be in the old tooling rack. I've asked them to identify it properly; not dragging out the first vaguely bracket-shaped thing.

Could the inspector recognise it from a photo? That might narrow the search before someone moves heavy tooling around.

Good idea, he's looking at the rack photos with stores. The review now lists an unexplained correction and possibly missing tooling. Less tidy than our original plan, more honest.

Worth finding now. Post back if they locate it; curious what that little word was hiding.
