Why does my delayed-result test pass only when I watch it?

I'm making an offline teaching exercise for FR10 inspection tracking. Old result arrives after a fresh attempt and ticks that new attempt complete. I can reproduce it by clicking events manually, but my test uses sleeps and wanders between passing and failing. How do I make that exact order repeat every time?
