Thor starts at $3,499. What workload actually earns that?

NVIDIA's availability post puts the Jetson AGX Thor developer kit at $3,499 to start. I'm interested for multi-camera robot perception, but that is a lot of budget before cameras or a robot. What measurement would make you move up from an existing computer? I'd rather hear about a bottleneck than a bigger number on a chart. https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/jetson-thor-physical-ai-edge/

August 2025 developer-kit starting price: US$3,499; the volume module price is a different offer.

Measure end-to-end latency with your actual camera streams and model. Include decoding and preprocessing, not just the inference call.

And what happens when it gets hot in the box you've chosen.

For learning I'd keep the computer I have. This costs more than the entire project I was imagining.

For a shared lab machine I'd weigh several projects against it, not one hobby build. Still need a workload list.

That distinction helps. Mine is a single experiment at the moment. I'll record timings before writing a shopping list.

Also don't compare the kit quote with the thousand-unit module price in the same post. Those aren't two shops selling the same basket.

Thank you. A surprising amount of 'half the price' disappears when you put the contents beside each other.

I had noticed the cheaper module number, so that saved me a misleading comparison. Keeping both offers labelled separately.
