Then you have two changes to untangle. Ask the vision person to repeat the chosen presentation with the settings held, using your accepted and rejected references. Buying another light before doing that would be an enthusiastic way to add a third variable.

They confirmed automatic exposure was active. Fixed-setting comparison requested with the same identified bezels.
