Then you have two changes to untangle. Ask the vision person to repeat the chosen presentation with the settings held, using your accepted and rejected references. Buying another light before doing that would be an enthusiastic way to add a third variable.
Keep the original set too, labelled with its settings. It explains why the first comparison couldn't answer your question; it needn't become the threshold reference.
