Our replacement software environment returns extra fields around the controller status, and the display appears to be using one of those fields as a valid mode even on failure; should I ask the author to check the documented success condition before decoding any status value?

Yes, and ask them to show what happens to the previous valid reading when the next request fails. A corrected parser can still leave an old normal indication on screen.
