how much vision proof is enough before ordering?

For a first automation project, I am trying to avoid buying a camera because the proposal says it could be useful later. The sample parts are not wildly variable, but they are not presented perfectly either. What would you ask a supplier to show before deciding whether vision belongs in the first order? I need something more useful than a polished video of one good cycle.

I'd ask them to run the awkward presentations, not just a mixed box of nice samples. Include the part turned slightly, one with the troublesome surface, and whatever a person would normally reject before loading. Then ask what the operator sees when it cannot decide. That last bit matters more to me than a high success number with no explanation.

Also ask what decision the camera makes. Finding a pose, checking a feature, or merely confirming a part is present are different jobs. A supplier can demonstrate all three with one camera and leave you paying for a capability the cell does not need.

That helps. I was only asking them to show what the camera could find, not what happens when it cannot make the decision. I will ask for examples that need an operator decision and for the exact action the proposal expects after that.
