Three pickup versions for one tray of housings

Our FR5 housing tray now has three saved pickup versions. Each was somebody's small improvement. None has stopped the occasional crooked grip. The tray looks seated and the fingers look undamaged, but those are hardly measurements. I want the physical setup checked before this becomes a fourth file with final in its name. Where would you start?

Tray location first, with maintenance isolating the setup for inspection. Does it sit against the intended contacts, or against something that merely looks like a stop?

There are two fixed pins and a side stop. Maintenance found a thin packing strip under one corner. No strip on the fixture drawing. Nobody has owned up yet.

Find why it was fitted before removing it. Could be compensating for another fault. Also check whether your three pickup versions predate that strip.

One version predates it. The other two are later. Setter says the strip stopped the tray rocking, which is a fairly important detail to leave out of handover.

So what made it rock?

Are all circulating trays the same revision, or was that strip added for a particular tray which has since moved elsewhere?

Two tray revisions. The strip was for the older one. We were told they were interchangeable because the pockets matched. The underside contacts don't. Thanks, Felix. That question got us somewhere.

Put both revisions in front of the fixture designer. You need an approved locating arrangement for whichever trays you will use, not a strip that travels by memory between shifts.

Designer has proposed a revised support arrangement for the current tray only. Old trays are now identified separately. Maintenance found no loose tool mounting, but the pickup versions still need sorting out.

Has the revised support been made and checked yet? Once the physical arrangement is settled, the integrator can review the pickup versions against it. I wouldn't nominate a favourite file in advance.

And stop calling the two trays interchangeable in stores.
