Our exposed-length sheet has no blank lengths on it

I am reviewing hand-loaded brass sleeve samples for an FR10 proposal. The exposed lengths differ, but nobody recorded the overall blank lengths or individual sample identities. Automatic loading is not authorised. Can this sheet tell us anything useful about seating repeatability?

Not enough to separate blank variation from seating. Do the physical samples still exist?

Yes, in one tray. They are not individually marked. We know the group, but cannot connect each remaining blank to a row on the sheet.

Then don't assign the longest blank to the longest exposed reading just because it makes a neat explanation.

What was the reference surface for the exposed-length measurement? The sheet also needs that definition. A consistent number has little meaning if different people measured from different features of the setup.

Fair point. I jumped straight to blank length and skipped whether the recorded measurement itself was defined.

For the next approved measurement study, identify each blank and record its relevant dimensions first. Put the measurement reference on the sheet. Do not expect the next operator to infer it from a photograph.

And retain repeated readings against that identity. Otherwise another tray of numbers will arrive with the same missing connection.

The setter says the readings came from the front jaw face, but the sheet does not say which jaw setup was installed. I've labelled the old data insufficient for a seating-repeatability conclusion.

Will the revised sheet record the jaw setup as well as the blank identity?

Yes. We have drafted fields for sample identity, relevant blank dimensions, setup identification and the agreed measurement reference. The responsible machining team will define the study before any further loading work.

I'd be interested in the result once that study is authorised and carried out.
