the drawing ends where our FR10 tool gets bulky

I've already asked for the loaded approach and empty return on our proposed FR10 fixture-loading job. The drawing that's come back still uses a centre line for the tool through the doorway. Our proposed fingers have a body behind them, and I can't see the open door shown at all. Before I spend more on this layout, I'd like a cheap way to show which missing measurements prevent a useful check; I don't need another point-reach picture.

Make a list against that drawing, starting with the actual open-door position and the full tool assembly. Include the blank held in it. Ask whoever drew the route to show those objects together at the awkward positions, not in separate views where everything fits.

Could your toolmaker give you an outline from the proposed assembly? Ours once supplied just the finger drawing because that was the bit we'd asked him to make. The adapter was somebody else's drawing. Nobody had actually combined them.

Rachel Barnes, that's close to what happened here. I have a finger drawing and a proposed body from different people. Lucy, I've asked for them to be combined with the held blank before the layout gets another pass.

Is the door position missing because it has not been measured, or because the drawing omitted an existing survey? Quite different amounts of work to recover.

Also, an outline is a good starting point, Rachel Barnes, but I wouldn't use a paper side view alone to choose the arm. There can be room in that view and none beside it.

Agreed. I meant get the assembly straight first, not approve it with cardboard. We wasted a review on a beautifully printed outline of something we weren't going to build.

Jamie, the survey sheet has the door opening, but not where the open panel sits relative to the proposed tool route. Someone needs to measure that. No hidden completed survey, unfortunately.

Mark that location as unknown on the drawing. An empty space looks an awful lot like available space once the explanation has been forwarded twice.

And keep the intended door position identifiable in the survey request. Measuring a convenient partly open position would give your layout person an answer to the wrong question.

I've put the unknown panel position on the marked-up view. Survey request names the intended open position. It also shows the tool-body drawing that's still provisional, so nobody mistakes that for measured hardware.

Who needs to get in to change the fixture, Isabel? I nearly left that out of ours because the arm route was the thing everyone wanted to see.

That could decide between two otherwise workable layouts. If both eventually clear the tool, I would still favour the one that leaves an ordinary fixture change straightforward. Provided it meets the rest of the job, obviously.

The setter changes it from the front. Rachel Barnes, thanks for catching that; his access wasn't on my missing-measurements list. Lucy, we haven't got two workable layouts yet, but I'll keep that comparison in the brief.

Can the setter mark where the fixture has to come out? 'Front access' can still leave a layout reviewer imagining that the fixture passes through a smaller gap than it does.

He can mark the removal direction on the proposed arrangement. I'm keeping the arm choice open until the combined tool, door position and fixture-change access have actually been reviewed. At least the next drawing request now says what's missing.
