Our spacer blank sheet gives protrusion but no blank lengths

I'm trying to get a sensible baseline for our proposed UR5e lathe loading. The hand-loading sheet lists different protrusions, then somebody has written 'poor seating' beside the largest one. We never measured the overall lengths. How is the next shift meant to tell a long blank from a badly seated one?

Can you connect each reading to a retained blank? If not, start with that on the replacement sheet. Otherwise the next shift gets the same puzzle in a different handwriting.

I'd ask your setter what surface the protrusion was measured from too. Even the one measurement you've got needs a shared reference.

The blanks are numbered, Harish. Rebecca, it's from the chuck face, but the sketch doesn't say which face. The setter says he can mark the actual reference and repeat his comparison using the same blanks.

We once found an end pip doing the seating for a blank. Look at the ends as well as length; don't assume two sawed pieces contact alike.

Get the setter to mark it on a photo. 'The obvious face' isn't a handover.

Nora, was that pip visible before loading, or did it only become obvious when you compared the measurements? I'm wondering how easily a normal incoming check would catch it.

Visible, once we actually looked at the seating end. Everyone had been admiring the machined end.

Our new measurements found two blank lengths, but that doesn't explain the full spread. The setter repeated one identified blank and got two different protrusions. He's stopped that comparison until maintenance checks the stop arrangement.

That's a much better question now. Same blank removes one big variable without buying another measuring gadget.

Same setter and method. Maintenance found the stop lock loose, so its position wasn't staying put. They've restored the arrangement to the specified setup. I want the repeated measurements done again before calling that the whole explanation.

Keep the two length groups in the repeat, not just the blank that exposed the loose stop.

And what becomes of the old 'poor seating' note? It should not survive as a finding on that longest blank now you know the setup was changing.

I've marked the old conclusion withdrawn, with the reason. The original readings stay visible. Nora's two-group repeat is on the setter's sheet, and the seating ends are included in his inspection.

Repeat finished. Protrusion is repeatable for each identified blank under the agreed check, and the difference between groups matches their overall-length difference. So we had real blank variation plus a loose stop, not a bad robot load. Thanks, Rebecca, for asking which face; that photo is now in the handover.

Useful handover now. Keep the setter's actual setup reference with the results, not only the photo.
