How do I explain why only one laptop reaches the FR10 service?

Our maintenance laptop sometimes pings the FR10 but its read-only status request times out, while another laptop has worked; how should I compare their address and route settings before anyone changes the controller to suit the failing machine?

Can you compare the actual destination address and route on both laptops? I'd start there, then compare the documented service connection. Ping getting a reply doesn't tell you that the application reached the service it needs.

The destination is identical, but our maintenance laptop has wireless and wired connections active; I have not yet checked which route the application traffic takes.

That would be my next check. Don't just compare adapter labels, look at the route chosen for that destination. One laptop may be taking a different path even with the same address typed into the script.

Get the working laptop's configuration noted before it leaves the bench. Address, mask, route, application environment and the service check that succeeded. Otherwise your reference setup vanishes and someone has to borrow it again.

Is the working laptop still available?

Yes, both are here; our network administrator found an overlapping route on the maintenance laptop, so the intended controller address was being reached through a different adapter.

Has the application been checked after the route correction, or only ping? I don't want us declaring victory over the easy half.

Did the second laptop work at the same socket?

Yes, same tested connection; after the administrator corrected the route, the documented read-only service check passed on the maintenance laptop too, with the settings recorded for the next shift.

Include the normal launch method in that handover. A correct network setup is useful, but the shortcut still needs to start the application environment you just tested.
