Why are we judging seating from exposed length alone?

Our hand-loaded spacer blanks have different stickout readings. Nothing else measured. What separates blank length from seating before the planned FR5 loading study? Automatic loading is not authorised.

Were those readings repeated loads of one identified blank or readings from several different blanks?

Several blanks, with no individual identities on the sheet.

Then that sheet cannot give you loading repeatability. It mixes whatever varies between the blanks with whatever varies when they are seated. Keep it as an observation that exposed lengths differed.

I'd have the setter show the measuring face and intended seat to whoever collects the next readings. Two people can both write stickout while using different references, and the spreadsheet will politely accept both.

David, would a marked sketch beside the sheet be enough for that reference?

A sketch helps after they agree what it represents, Louis. I'd still ask each person to show the reading on the actual arrangement; the drawing cannot reveal that they understood it differently.

Dinesh, can you measure the overall length of each identified blank before the agreed manual loading checks?

Yes. Quality can include blank length and repeated manual seating readings in the new sheet.

I would also keep the blank's end condition visible in the inspection notes. Length alone isn't the complete physical explanation if the relevant contact surface differs, though nobody has established a contact defect here.

Would subtracting blank length from stickout isolate seating, or am I oversimplifying that?

Depends on the defined references. I wouldn't subtract columns before agreeing what each measures.

Which end and fixture reference does the current stickout measurement actually use?

That isn't specified on the old sheet either. I'll leave the calculated column out for now.

Good reason to define the method before designing the spreadsheet. The useful question is how the blank sits against the intended reference, not whether we can make two available columns cancel neatly.

David, I'd still record the raw lengths even if the derived measure waits. Otherwise the next review discovers that somebody retained only the calculated answer and threw away the evidence behind it.

Agreed, Will. I was objecting to an undefined calculation, not the raw measurements; keep those with the blank identities.

Will the repeated loads be distinguishable from repeat readings without unloading?

I'll give those separate entries. Thanks Nadia; repeat reading and repeat loading were sharing one heading.

That distinction matters. Measuring an unchanged setup several times can help you understand the measurement, but it does not show how consistently a blank seats after removal and replacement.

Who is agreeing the completed manual measurement method with quality and the setter?
