I want to learn about grippers before spending on an arm

Could I make a useful first project out of drawing fingers for a few household objects, without buying the robot yet? I'd like to understand why one shape suits the contact better than another. I'm tempted to start with a mug, but the handle and curved body seem like two different projects already. Would you choose something simpler, or keep the awkward object and compare ideas on paper?

Keep the mug. Draw two ideas and explain what each leaves awkward. No need to buy anything yet.

I'd still draw a plain cylinder alongside it. Not because the mug is wrong, but because it gives you something to compare when the handle makes an idea awkward. I would keep both as drawings for now (including how you intend to let go).
