How much can I claim from our locator trial?

I added a tray locator to our Fairino FR5 setup for tray-to-tray loading with a rigid molded housing in a small tray handling cell. A few supervised runs looked more consistent, then a tray replacement brought another missed pickup. I want to share the result accurately. The change seems useful, but 'fixed' feels a bit generous.

@SofiaBarnes0543 Was the replacement tray fully seated when that miss happened? Check that observation before assuming the locator or taught point needs another change.

@WillBrooks0835 It wasn't fully seated. The locator reduced visible movement, but it didn't stop us leaving the tray short of its seat.

Report both findings. Ask the responsible person to review a clear seating check, then include normal tray replacement in a supervised comparison before calling the handling fixed.

@WillBrooks0835 I'm considering describing the result as an incomplete improvement. Would that convey the evidence clearly, or might it sound as if I'm avoiding the unsuccessful result?

@SofiaBarnes0543 My separate fixture trial improved one condition without resolving changeover. Describing the remaining failure directly communicated more than forcing the whole result into a success-or-failure label.

You could call the locator fixed and leave seating as an operator issue. The mechanism did reduce movement.

@WillBrooks0835 That's a convenient split. The original problem was missed pickups, and ordinary replacement still produces one. You haven't established that seating is simply an operator issue.

You're right; that label would overstate it and blame the operator. Describe the locator's observed benefit and the unresolved seating process together as an incomplete handling improvement.

We kept the tool and program unchanged for this trial. That makes the locator comparison cleaner, although it's still only a few supervised runs.

If those stayed the same, doesn't that prove the locator helped? I'm not sure why the sample size changes that bit.

@HarishChen1185 It strengthens the comparison. It doesn't establish how reliably your complete setup handles normal variation and tray changes, which is the larger claim you're deciding whether to make.

For my own trial, recording both successful and unsuccessful changeovers prevented the write-up from suggesting that all replacements produced the problem.

I've records of successful replacements alongside the miss. They suggest inconsistent understanding of the seating process, although the reason for that hasn't been established.

The observations support investigating the seating process without settling its cause. Visibility and access may warrant checking alongside the instructions, rather than assuming wording is the only issue.

@BenBrown0892 Would a seating photo help the discussion? I don't want a picture of a good tray to imply we can always tell it's seated.

@SofiaBarnes0543 Yes, label it as the intended condition. Include what you observed at the miss, and ask reviewers whether the difference is actually clear in normal use.

Would enlarging the locating stop be an appropriate suggestion, or does the fixture need inspection before deciding how to make seating more apparent?
