The missing blank lengths

Our FR10 loading proposal has a lovely chart of sleeve protrusion and absolutely no measurements of the loose blanks. I'm trying to find out why the hand-loaded samples sit differently. Excellent chart, wrong argument?

Can't choose a loading fix from that. Measure the blanks as well, and say which end is meant to seat; a drawing of the stop would save some guessing here.

Rear face seats against a fixed stop. Same supplier bag, which I was told meant same length... I've asked for actual measurements.

A bag is not a measuring instrument.

Were these loaded by one person, or did the chart combine several people's checks without saying which samples they handled?

Two people. One wrote sample numbers; the other wrote 'next five'. I have the numbered five, so I'll start there.

Start with those five. Did anyone actually see a blank fail to reach the stop, or is everyone inferring that from protrusion?

And don't lose the other five just because their paperwork is annoying. They may be the ones with the problem. Separate pile, unresolved identity.

Nobody watched the rear face. The numbered set varies in length, but not enough to explain all the protrusion differences. Other five are still here.

We chased something like this on a manual job. Turned out one person was checking against the end of a chamfer and another against the flat face. Before you buy measuring kit, make them show you where they're putting it.

Hazel, did changing the measuring point remove the whole spread on yours, or did you still have troublesome blanks afterwards?

Most of the argument, not all the variation. We still had real differences. But at least we stopped arguing over readings from two different places.

Worth checking, but Sofia has a stop face as well as an exposed end. A burr at the back won't announce itself in your front-end measurement.

Thank you, Hazel. We had that exact measuring-point muddle on two readings. Correcting it shrank the spread; it didn't remove the odd high sample.

Who will deal with that odd sample if the loading proposal goes ahead, especially if an operator has to inspect each blank before it reaches the tray?

Have the machinist inspect its seating end and the stop before budgeting an operator to nurse every blank. One odd sample is a reason to look closer, not recruit someone.

Both questions matter. I'd leave preparation time undecided until Sofia knows what happened to that sample; guessing zero would be optimistic too.

Machinist found a raised edge on the odd one. We're checking the rest of the retained bag before deciding whether this is incoming preparation or an occasional reject.

Was that edge actually touching the stop, Sofia? Only asking because ours had plenty of ugly bits that weren't causing the trouble.

Yes, same face and contact area. We haven't checked the rest yet. The robot proposal can wait for something better than 'probably a bad bag'.
