Send representative closed cartons with the usual tape and contents, and have the supplier show their proposed contact positions on those rather than nudging the seam out of the trial.
Vacuum demo avoided the tape seam on every carton

They're happy to try ours. They asked us to specify one cup location, but the seam wanders between boxes. That is part of the problem.
22 pointsGive them the observed seam range instead of an imaginary fixed position, otherwise the operator ends up straightening cartons to preserve the supplier's nice test result.
20 pointsSample range. Include the rough-board carton as well as the glossy printed one.
10 pointsAnd identify which samples represent normal supply variation, so one attractive board finish doesn't quietly become the only approved carton.
5 pointsI've pulled examples from three deliveries. One has wrinkled tape but passed our normal packing checks. It is going in the sample group, not being quietly tidied up.
9 pointsKeep its condition recorded, then you can discuss whether the tooling accommodates it or whether packing acceptance needs an explicitly agreed change.
13 pointsWho owns rejection when pickup cannot be confirmed? Our old line had a decent vacuum tool and a terrible exception route, so somebody stood beside it rescuing awkward cartons all afternoon. Ask for that case in the proposal.
14 pointsCurrently the proposal just says retry. No limit, no rejected-carton route. I've asked for pickup verification, loss-of-grip response and a defined exception process in the supplier's assessment.
21 pointsCan I ask how they plan to assess release into the dispatch lane, as well as pickup?
6 pointsRelease belongs in the same assessment, along with the real destination geometry; sticking or dragging a carton after placement is still a handling failure.
6 pointsAsk for results by sample type. A single success percentage can hide the awkward board.
6 pointsSupplier reviewed photos and wants to move the contact area away from the seam where possible, then trial all board variants. No claim yet that one location covers the observed range.
17 pointsHave them document any presentation requirement that comes with that choice, because a different contact area may depend on carton position you don't currently control.
4 pointsThat requirement is being added. We are also costing the incoming guide arrangement they suggested. The vacuum tool quote alone was not the whole pickup concept, apparently.
14 pointsTrial booked with our packed samples and a representative lane section. I haven't accepted the concept; at least tape wrinkles now appear in the agenda rather than only in our workshop.
20 pointsInclude whoever will maintain the cups and guides in the review, so any cleaning and replacement assumptions reach the people doing those jobs.
