Our FR5 camera folder has acquired three different scratch labels for what looks like one shiny stripe. The worst bit is that the crops remove the cover edge, so I can't even tell which way the part was sitting. I've kept the originals we do have. Do I start by rebuilding the image links or getting the retained covers in front of quality?
Get the covers in front of quality. I once spent ages sorting filenames only to discover two pictures were of the same accepted part. The links still matter, but you need somebody to decide what is actually on the metal.
Both jobs can happen. Just don't let your reconstructed filename become a confirmed sample identity because it looks tidy. Mark uncertain matches and keep them out of threshold decisions until they're checked.
Do any of the originals show the cover seated in the proposed holder? A clean reference picture on a desk will not tell you why the presentation changes at the camera.
Two do. Different stops touching the cover in each, which I'd missed while staring at the stripe. I'll take those full frames to the holder designer as well as the parts to quality.
Useful catch. Let quality keep a real faint reject in the eventual comparison too. It's easy to improve the most irritating glare and then discover you've also made the mark you needed to see disappear.
