Yes. The insert carries the product along two sides. Those sides aren't marked outside.

I'd want packaging to mark those load paths on the layer drawing, because otherwise the tooling person may solve a perfectly reasonable problem involving an imaginary box.

And find an outside reference. A drawing can know which way the insert faces while the incoming carton gives your station absolutely no clue.

Does the closing process keep the insert orientation consistent with a printed face? Might save adding another mark, provided somebody actually checks that relationship.

Not reliably. I've found inserts facing both ways behind the same printed face.

We had a similar packaging change nobody considered a handling change. The artwork stayed identical. I'd bring the packing operator into this review; they may know when that choice happens.

Lower count is possible. Dispatch hasn't agreed to it, but it isn't ruled out.

Then draw that version too. Losing a few positions might cost less than teaching every upstream shift a new packaging distinction.

David, I'd still ask packaging about the alternative. Aligned doesn't automatically mean supported, especially near the pallet edges.

Agreed on the edge positions. I meant compare the lower-count version, not approve it because the boxes point the same way.

Can the tool designer use that marked drawing for the withdrawal sequence as well? I'd rather not have packaging and tooling each approving a different revision.

I've sent that revision. The fingers haven't been checked against neighbouring cartons yet.

That neighbouring-carton bit caught us when an empty pallet demonstration looked lovely, then the last placement needed room occupied by everything we'd already placed.

Lucy, are you taking both proposed patterns into that tooling review? Otherwise the cheaper-looking option may simply have fewer details drawn.

That should make the comparison easier to read. I'm interested whether the packing team prefers controlling orientation or accepting the lower count.

Keep that as their decision until they answer. The insert discovery explains the drawing problem, but it doesn't yet establish which pattern your dispatch area can use.
