Why rotate our cartons onto the unsupported direction?

Our FR5 pattern rotates carton bearing edges over gaps. Nice top view. What should packaging and tooling compare together?

A section through the filled carton and the supporting layer, with the finger entry and withdrawal on it, will expose more than the top view alone.

Bring a representative filled carton to that review. Empty board can look persuasive on a desk while the contents load the base quite differently. Packaging should say which support is required.

And keep the pallet deck in the comparison, since layer one can bridge gaps before you rotate anything above it.

Bottom layer is supported on the current deck drawing. The rotated layer is the problem.

Are the cartons always presented in the same orientation, or is someone expected to turn them before the robot takes them?

Bruno, that preparation question matters, though I wouldn't solve a support problem by asking the operator to feed every box differently before the pattern itself has been assessed.

Jasper, I read Bruno as asking what work is already assumed, not proposing a cure; both the support and that labour belong in the comparison.

Exactly. I have seen an automatic packing proposal begin with a person rotating every carton. Useful to know before comparing cycle times, even when the eventual pattern is perfectly sound.

Mixed orientation arrives. Quote assumes label forward. No allowance for who turns them.

Then ask dispatch whether label-forward is actually required in every position, rather than assume the robot supplier's preferred presentation is a packing requirement.

Farah, thanks, I read a proposed change into Bruno's question. Owen, keep the manual turning visible until dispatch answers. It is a real job if that assumption stays.

Dispatch wants the outside labels readable, not every label facing the same way.

That gives the designer some freedom, but still have packaging assess the bearing edges on whichever alternative uses it; visible labels cannot compensate for missing support.

Who handles a carton arriving the wrong way for the selected position? Fewer required rotations is useful, but it does not necessarily remove the preparation task entirely.

Could an aligned layer be included as a candidate too, Owen, with its pallet count and tool access shown? I wouldn't assume rotation is necessary just because it is in the first drawing.

Aligned candidate requested. Packaging hasn't accepted either arrangement yet.

I'd want the person who feeds this to try the proposed orientation rule before it is priced as negligible work. Turning one example in a meeting is not the same as keeping up with mixed arrivals.

And retain a view of the full layer sequence beside the section when the alternatives arrive, since support and withdrawal can change as neighbouring positions fill.
